Mercedes Schlapp's role as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. In her role as the White House's Strategist Communications Advisor Schlapp has to face a variety of challenges. The president is his own communications director. Numerous legal issues that could affect the messaging strategy. And Cabinet Secretaries who are involved in controversies. Schlapp has managed to stay in the right frame of mind and stay on top of her game by working closely alongside White House teams in political issues and legislative affairs, as well the larger communications team. The focus has been on matters such as the safety of schools, opioids, infrastructure and trade. Her interactions with journalists aren't very much in her present role. The issue came up in March when she received a flurry of attention, when it became known that her name would be considered a possible candidate to replace Hope Hicks as the director of communication. It was in March that she was the subject of a sudden surge in attention, when it became known that Schlapp would be an option to fill Hope Hicks's position as director of communication.
